The SMS revolution reaches Antarctica

Abstract:
SMS communication has reached the shores of Antarctica. Simon French, an Australian electrician based at Casey Station in the Antarctic, sends text messages from his PC using web SMS, which allows him to stay in touch with family, friends and customers back in Australia.

The world’s fastest growing communication channel, mobile messaging, has now reached the cold shores of Antarctica.

Simon French, one of two electricians working at Australia’s Casey Station in the Antarctic, has recently employed SMS as a communication tool. This innovative, easy to use technology allows SMS messages to be sent from a computer to mobile phones, and it’s through this function that Simon stays in touch with family, friends and customers back in Australia.

Simon is an electrician by trade and it remains his primary responsibility at Casey Station, but given the remote location, he regularly assists scientists out in the field, both in summer and the frozen winter months. As Simon states: “Your job description and what you end up actually doing differ quite dramatically!”
